2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid vs. Camry Hybrid, Altima Hybrid, and Malibu Hybrid

Like the price of sea bass on the restaurant menu, the cost of gas has become wildly unpredictable. As this comparison convoy of four family-size hybrids slipped past a station near our headquarters in Ann Arbor, Michigan, we noticed the posted price of regular had dropped to $1.78.

No worries, momma. Good thing nobody called on the ad to sell your Tahoe .

Hybrids get more compelling, of course, when gas zooms past four bucks a gallon. But that price will be just a sweet summer memory if Ahmadinejad busts a nuke over Tel Aviv. Closer to home, and more likely to happen short-term, Obama campaigned on a promise to cap and trade carbon, which is guaranteed to put gas prices on the up elevator. So we think hybrids are worth your consideration even if gas has gotten cheaper as you read this.

A little background: The mainstream media has recently been foaming all over itself about “plug-in hybrids,” a new category of someday cars that has replaced the hydrogen fuel-cell cars that were to happen someday in the foamings of a few years ago.

At least plug-in hybrids are technically more feasible than fuel cells. But whether they can soon be brought to market profitably and affordably is an open question.

The four hybrids here are readily available and run entirely on gasoline. They just run farther on each gallon than conventional cars. They do it without power cords. In fact, they are very much like normal cars except that the engines usually shut off when the cars stop moving.

That said, there are substantial differences among the hybrids within this group. The Chevrolet Malibu is what engineers call a “mild hybrid.” Added to its entirely conventional powertrain is a belt-driven motor-generator, this to capture a small share of the energy that would normally be wasted as heat in the brakes, then that energy is fed back into the drive system as needed for engine starting and acceleration. The reclaimed energy is stored in a relatively small nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) battery until needed. This type of hybrid cannot move the car without running the engine.

The potential fuel savings are small with a mild hybrid. If the added cost is similarly small, it could be a good buy. We’ll see.

The three other cars here are state-of-the-art fuel savers capable of moving at city-traffic speeds for a few blocks or more without running the engine, depending upon speed, slope, and, of course, the battery’s state of charge. These hybrids reach beyond regeneration (capturing “braking” energy) to give the fuel-burning engine a new assignment: It becomes an auxiliary power unit, called upon only when a computer decides that burning fuel is the most efficient way to propel the car.

Toyota has been the world leader in this style of hybrid, and the Camry operates very much like the now-famous Prius. albeit with upsized components appropriate to the dimensions and weight of this much larger sedan. For its Altima hybrid, Nissan licensed Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive technology, so the Camry and Altima operate similarly, even though each relies on the automaker’s own engine.

While Toyota wears the hybrid halo, Ford mostly got yawns for the hybrid system it introduced in the 2005 Escape SUV, even though it was a full hybrid capable of Prius-like engine-off propulsion. Now, five model years later, the latest evolution of Ford’s hybrid thinking appears in the 2010 Fusion.

Never mind the high price of sea bass and the low price of gas, this calls for a comparison test. Which of these four carmakers builds the best family-hauling four-door hybrid?

2008 Scion xB – Long-Term Road Test – Car Reviews – Car and Driver #car #reviews, #automotive #reviews, #automotive #news, #2008 #scion #xb

2008 Scion xB

At the Scion brand s launch in 2003, Toyota officials used the term funky about 5000 times. Two Jameses Rick and Brown may have been credible arbiters of funk. But when you re talking about cars, what the heck does funk mean? A Lotus Elan with an Isuzu engine? The original Saab 900 Turbo? Chrysler s TC by Maserati? Hard to tell. All we know is that Scion s coupes and hatchbacks have demonstrated the barest fillip of funk about as edgy and hip as a Toyota Yaris. Scion s fortunes, perhaps as a result, have since sagged, with their intended 18-to-24 demographic rising fast and their Internet sales dwindling. Toyota s fear is that Scion may soon be viewed as a mainstream brand specializing in entry-level eco-wheezers.

Throughout, however, the boxy xB has at least evinced a filament of funk, developing a small but loyal following, especially in the Schwarzenegger state. Now in its second generation, the xB is altogether a better car, with 55 more horses, electric steering, 10 more cubic feet of people volume, and a bonus half-cubic-foot of cargo space.

After 16 months and 40,000 miles of sympathy-free roughhousing at C/D, our xB s before-and-after performance changed little. Skidpad grip (our car came with the $250 TRD rear anti-roll bar) remained the same at 0.81 g. Up to 80 mph, acceleration fell a 10th but afterward made a comeback, scoring an identical 28.7 seconds to 110 mph. Top speed held steady at an electronically limited 124 mph.

Nowadays, 158 horsepower doesn t sound like much, but the xB weighs only 3039 pounds, enabling it to match, say, a Mitsubishi Lancer GTS to 60 mph. What s more, it delivered an average of 26 mpg, with the majority of those miles logged during city errands.

What definitely improved with age was braking, dropping from 179 feet when new to an excellent 167 feet at our test s conclusion, thanks to tires that were nearing their wear bars and therefore grippier. We installed snow tires on the xB for six months of slate-gray Michigan misery, then reinstalled the original Goodyear Eagle RS-As. They showed 90-percent wear as we waved goodbye to our Blackberry Crush xB, meaning that a commute through a November blizzard turned our knuckles not white but translucent. What saved us was the xB s aggressive stability and traction control.

How Are the Value of My Car and the Cost of Repair Determined? Info – Car Reviews – Car and Driver #car #reviews, #automotive #reviews, #automotive #news, #how #are #the #value #of #my #car #and #the #cost #of #repair #determined?

How Are the Value of My Car and the Cost of Repair Determined?

There are several standard guidelines for determining the value of your car for insurance purposes. You and your insurer can refer to the Blue Book, which lists the depreciated value of all new and used cars. One Blue Book is published by the National Association of Automobile Dealers (NADA) at http://www.nada.com. The other is published by Kelley Blue Book of Irvine, California, at http://www.kbb.com.

When you file your claim, your insurance company will refer you to a claims adjuster. The adjuster will verify the loss and determine what it will cost to repair the car. The adjuster’s estimate can serve as a benchmark to compare your own mechanic’s estimate.

No good adjuster or insurance company will expect you to sign an agreement accepting the insurer’s estimate as the total claim payment until you’ve established, to your satisfaction, that it will cover the cost of repair. The insurer will expect you to get your own estimate from your mechanic, garage, or car dealer. Don’t allow yourself to feel pressured into accepting the insurer’s estimate of repair costs without getting at least one estimate of your own.

Your insurance company can’t require you to have repairs done at a particular shop. But they can insist that you get more than one estimate for the work to be done on your car. Just as you want to make sure that your car is adequately repaired, the insurer wants to make sure it doesn’t pay a grossly inflated repair bill.

Don’t be surprised if your insurance company opts to pay for the lowest bid. You don’t have to accept that bid if you believe the low bid won’t adequately repair your car. Don’t hesitate to argue with the adjuster if you really believe his repair estimate is too low based on what your mechanic has told you.

One factor that could reduce the amount of your claim for a repair job is what insurance companies call betterment. If your old car is repaired with brand-new parts, your insurer may argue that the repairs have actually enhanced the car’s value and therefore they can legitimately reduce your claim by the difference between a used part and a new one.

It’s up to your insurer to decide whether to pay for repairing your car or to declare it a total loss and pay you its book value. Most standard auto policies will not pay to repair a vehicle if the repairs cost more than the cash value assigned to the car. There won’t be any dispute about whether to repair the car if it was completely totaled. But you may argue about what the pieces of the car were worth when they were assembled as a car. For you to get a settlement higher than the Blue Book value of your car’s make and model, you will have to submit evidence such as mileage records, service history, and affidavits from mechanics to show that your car was worth more. You’re entitled to the market price of the car you just lost. You shouldn’t get more or less than what you are due.

Next question: What are my rights when filing a claim?

If the matter is being appealed, it will be noted below.

On October 28, 2015 the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) filed a consent order against Security National Automotive Acceptance Company (SNAAC) to settle charges that the business conducted aggressive debt collection tactics against military service members in violation of the Consumer Financial Protection Act of 2010. The CFPB alleged that the business threatened to contact and contacted delinquent borrowers’ commanding officers, disclosing details about the borrowers’ debts and delinquencies. The CFPB also alleged the business made misleading statements to service members on the potential impact of remaining in debt, the business’s intention to take legal action, and it’s ability to obtain involuntary allotments and garnishments. The business agreed to refund or credit $2.28 million to affected consumers and pay a penalty of $1 million. In a separate Stipulated Final Judgement and Order entered on October 27, 2015 SNAAC consented to change their debt collection procedures. The consent orders were for settlement purposes only and should not be considered as an admission of guilt or finding of violation of the law.
