Cover letter tips for finance professionals

If you re searching for a finance job or want to be prepared just in case, you will need a dynamic cover letter to grab the hiring managers attention. Follow the advice of these career experts to make sure your letter measures up.

Quickly state your case

Judy Friedler, principal of CareerPro International and a specialist in career marketing for finance professionals, recommends leading with a summary of your experience and expertise. The summary should encapsulate your core competencies and level of experience in the finance field, she says.

Friedler offers the following example: I am a financial analyst with 12 years of experience and the proven ability to increase profits, minimize financial risk and strengthen market positions through the use of financial analytics.

Goodman suggests incorporating a high-impact cover letter opener, such as: Shortening the closing cycle, improving cash flow, reducing variances against budget and increasing customer satisfaction are what I do best.

Speak to the employer s needs

Goodman suggests addressing the employer s specific issues. If you know the employer has just opened a new plant and needs a controller, then that is what you should focus on, he says. Emphasize how your skills and experience would benefit the employer and what you would accomplish if you got the job.

Add industry keywords

When cover letters and resumes are entered into a database, a search filter often ranks applicants based on keyword density. The more relevant keywords you have, the better, Goodman says. Of course, sentences should make sense and not be contrived just to increase the number of keywords in the documents.

Keywords are also important for human reviewers to see, because they show you are well-versed in industry terminology.

For example, a tax accountant might incorporate keywords such as CPA, GAAP compliance and tax audits, whereas a financial analyst might incorporate business modeling, financial analysis and forecasting. The keywords don t need to be in list format like they would be on a resume, but rather incorporated in a description of your background or accomplishments, Friedler says.

Avoid the dreaded trash bin

Carlson, whose firm averages about 50 job requisitions daily, stresses the importance of proofreading. Have someone review your cover letter, because spelling and grammar mistakes could get you thrown out of the process before the manager even reviews your resume, he says.

Manappuram Finance Ltd. was incorporated in 1992 and is recognised today as a leading national player in its core activity of gold loans. We have a nationwide presence through 3,747 branches across 28 states and UTs. Our Assets under Management (AUM) exceed Rs.13,000 crores and our workforce is about 19,000 strong.

    Beyond the focus on business, our wide-ranging Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities are proof of our abiding commitment to the wider society. For example, through the Manappuram Foundation, we provide free health insurance coverage of up to Rs.60, 000 per annum to over one lakh people in the BPL category in the Valapad and six other adjoining Panchayats of Thrissur District. In fact, since the project began in May 2010, over six thousand families have benefitted, and about four crore rupees have been reimbursed to them against their medical bills.

    And, talking about staying true to our roots, even today we continue to be based in that same village of Valapad where we were born six decades ago.

    POST GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN BANKING OPERATIONS

    (An Exclusive Career Program For ICICI Bank)

    The objective of the Post Graduate Diploma in Banking Operations (PGDBO) program is to build a pool of banking professionals in India, who can sustain the growing momentum of ICICI bank and help it achieve new levels of profitability and customer responsiveness.

    The PGDBO is a six month program with three months of full time class work, followed by three months of internship session. The program is unique in both its content as well as its methodology.

    Common elements running through the Curriculum:

    Selected candidates, who are shortlisted for admission, are granted admission with placement assurance (subject to fulfillment of specific academic and non-academic criteria). Before commencing internship, ICICI Bank will offer provisional appointment letter to the candidate. Additional terms and conditions as specified by ICICI Bank, shall apply. Students also get to undergo paid Internship which helps substantially recover part-cost of the program even before the final diploma is awarded.

    ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA AND SELECTION PROCESS

    • Born on or after 1st May,1993
    • =50% in Class Xth ,XIIth and Graduation.
    • No gap allowed in complete academics, Regular Graduation /no correspondence, No Siblings and all other terms conditions as applicable.
    • Applicant must provide additional undertaking if they are from List of Colleges

    Candidate are selected on basis of an aptitude test and personal interview.

    PROGRAM SCHEDULE (Full Time Option)

    During classwork session, the PGDBO program consists of 4-5 hours of classroom contact and three hours of supervised self-study per day. Supervised self-study takes place after the classwork.

    EVALUATION AND CERTIFICATION

    Both the classroom learning and the internship sessions of the program are evaluated. During classroom training, performance is evaluated via tests, quizzes, assignments and project-work, while during internship; the candidates are evaluated based on the performance at work and on their professional personality.
