Boulder Summer Conference on Consumer Financial Decision Making

Boulder Summer Conference 2016 Information

May 22nd-24th, 2016
Boulder, Colorado

St Julien Hotel
900 Walnut Street
Boulder, CO 80302
877.303.0900

Cutting edge research on consumer financial decision making by scholars across diverse fields: economics, law, psychology, sociology, anthropology, marketing, finance, and consumer sciences. Lively discussion of this research by scholars, regulators, consumer advocates, and financial services professionals.

Overview

The 2016 Boulder Summer Conference on Consumer Financial Decision Making will be held May 22-24 at the St. Julien Hotel at a great time of year to visit Boulder, Colorado.

The conference will provide an opportunity for exchange of ideas among researchers in different fields working on problems of consumer financial decision-making.

Consumer welfare is strongly affected by household financial decisions large and small: choosing mortgages; saving to fund college education or retirement; using credit cards to fund current consumption; choosing how to “decumulate” savings in retirement; deciding how to pay for health care and insurance; and investing in the stock market. In all of these domains, consumers are often poorly informed and susceptible to making serious errors that have large personal and societal consequences.

Basic research in judgment and decision making, psychology, consumer research, behavioral finance, and behavioral economics can inform our understanding of how consumers actually make such decisions and how consumers can be helped to make better decisions by innovations in public policy, business, and consumer education.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Center for Research on Consumer Financial Decision Making at the University of Colorado and by the Leeds School of Business.

Conference Format

We begin with a keynote address and panel discussion Sunday late afternoon, followed by a reception and poster session. Monday and Tuesday we will have 10 total plenary sessions of 75 minutes each, each with two related papers, a discussant, and plenty of time for audience questions and comments.

For those arriving Saturday, we have a Sunday morning hike for attendees and their families.

    Conference Theme: Financial Inclusion and Emerging Markets Finance

    Access to suitable and affordable finance is a precondition for meeting basic human needs and a key ingredient in small entrepreneur, job, and wealth creations. Inclusive financing and its innovation are a useful instrument that helps those excluded from society to access financial services. Moreover, emerging economies, including China, India, Brazil, Russia, South Africa and others, have experienced rapid economic growth over the past several decades, however, these markets still have long posed a challenge for finance. Financial inclusion and emerging markets finance are high on the research and policy agenda. A broad exchange on micro, macro and policy topics in these areas will advance our knowledge and ultimately provide effective solutions to the many unique problems arising in emerging economies.

    To provide cutting-edge insights into current research work on financial inclusion and emerging market finance, we invite papers on the following topics but are not limited to:

    • The development of microfinance and rural finance;
    • Roles of banks or other financial institutions in financial inclusion;
    • Financial inclusion versus financial stability: is there a trade-off? ;
    • The impact of financial inclusion on poverty;
    • Institutional issues: management, governance, legal form, transformation, growth, mission drift;
    • Financing for mirco-, small and medium enterprises and agribusinesses;
    • Innovation in microfinance, internet finance, crowdfunding and seed financing
    • Small firm finance in emerging markets;
    • Policy and regulatory issues related to financial inclusion;
    • Banking business models and their impact on profitability and operational efficiency in emerging financial markets;
    • Capital markets activities and development in emerging economies;
    • Financing of cleantech and sustainability in emerging markets;
    • New thinking in emerging market design
    • The effect of global regulatory reforms on emerging financial markets.

    OrangeCounty.net – Premier listings for all of Orange County, California. Featuring Orange County Businesses and Services for both residents and business owners.

    Where do you look to find the business trends and sociological developments that will define where the cutting edge cities of the next century are headed? Seattle? Austin? San Jose? Not so, according to New York Times critic Paul Goldberger who believes, There is no better place to think about the American landscape and what it is turning into than in Orange County.

    Whether you’re talking about its growing dominance in high-tech industries or its leadership in identifying and responding to a more diverse demographic base, the County of Orange is positioned to lead much of Southern California and the entire state, in a transition to an information age economy. Consider that the business area around John Wayne Airport, once noted for its strawberry fields and quiet planned communities, is now the third largest Downtown in California in terms of office space, behind only Los Angeles and San Francisco. Consider also the the County as a whole has the thirteenth largest number of business establishments and the fourteenth largest consumer market in the entire nation.

    Until the 1940s, the County’s economy was based largely on agriculture but post World War II growth saw a number of aerospace industries, like Northrop and Hughes, move here to take advantage of a burgeoning population. The number of science-based industries multiplied exponentially with the arrival of the University of California, Irvine campus, in the mid-60s, until today the County has clearly emerged as Southern California’s high-tech leader with 21 of the so-called Fast Fifty top companies located here.

    About 1,000 high-tech businesses, including scores of computer, software, biotechnology, and medical-device companies, are located around the Irvine Spectrum business center at the junction of the San Diego and Santa Ana Freeways.

    The success and growth of the Irvine Spectrum has led to the development of the University Research Park, on the northwest corner of UC Irvine, lauded nationwide as a major research institution, which will accommodate another 100 high-tech companies. Total high-technology employment in the County of Orange tops 76000 jobs, more than regions such as Raleigh-Durham, Seattle, Austin, and San Diego.

    But what really brings strength to the region’s economy is its diversity and emphasis on thousands of smaller businesses, many minority-owned (roughly one out of every four), that allow it to outperform the rest of Southern California and most of the nation in more difficult economic times. Fashion leaders like St. John Dritts, Roxy, and Gotcha were all founded in the County of Orange. And While Detroit may still manufacture most of the cars driven in the US, they are often designed by subsidiaries that call the Tech Coast home. Leaders in all fields – from fashion to music to automobiles – look to Orange County to spot tomorrow’s trends today.

    Michael Stevenson – Human Resources Support Services Manager at Bombardier Belfast

    “For the last few years we have taken advantage of the in house update courses, meaning our payroll and HR staff benefit from the excellent and consistent advice given. The manual is invaluable as is the ongoing support.”

    Rosi Strasshine – Payroll Manager, Isos Housing Group

    “I cannot praise these training days enough they are thoroughly enjoyable and informative, can be tailored to individual company needs and carried out in a relaxed, non-pressured way that everyone appreciates.”

    Rosi Strasshine – Payroll Manager, Isos Housing Group

    “My team always attends the annual Payroll and HR Update course. Essential information covering often complex legislative changes, always presented by excellent trainers with in depth knowledge of their subject. A ‘must attend’ course for any serious payroll professional.”

    Deon Piovesan – Finance and Payroll Manager at Westminster Kingsway College

    “I’ve booked the HR and Payroll Update course most years and during roles with at least 3 different employers. One thing remains the same; a course that is relevant, well delivered and enjoyable and that is key when trying to retain the many pieces of legislation changes to which payroll professionals are exposed.”

    Tracey Hinton – Payroll Manager at Wilson James Limited

    “I have used The Learn Centre on a number of occasions and have found it provides a great platform to gain the knowledge required to carry out my job. I started off with the Payroll Technician course and this in-depth learning gave me a great foundation of payroll knowledge to build upon and give me the confidence to progress up the career ladder, well worth it and would certainly recommend, no matter what level you are at there will be a course/qualification that can help you.”

    Ayman Zagloul – Assistant Payroll Supervisor at Queen’s University Belfast

    “Payroll may not be the most exciting of topic for some but The Learn Centre really bring it to life – the brilliant networking opportunities with fellow professionals is an added bonus. They cover an amazing range of topics too if you need to upskill, then The Learn Centre is the organisation to help you do it.”

    Carsten Staehr – CEO at Cintra HR Payroll Services

    “I have chosen The Learn Centre both for my own knowledge base and in-house training courses for my teams for many years. I have always been extremely impressed with the content of the courses, people engagement and the positive feedback from my staff.”
