Cloud Storage Pros and Cons

Enterprises considering public cloud storage should carefully weigh the benefits and drawbacks.

For every advocate of public cloud storage, there appears to be a naysayer ready to run it down. For every dream migration of data to the cloud there appears to be a cloud nightmare lurking. So what s the real story? Is the cloud all bad or all good?

Like actual clouds, the answer is seldom black and white. Plenty of shades of gray are apparent when you look up to the sky or view the murky world of cloud storage. So let s take a look at some of the primary cloud storage pros and cons.

Pro Offsite Management

The cloud enables off-site, online storage that somebody else physically maintains. This frees up attention for other priorities, particularly if you have a sound relationship with a reliable vendor at a reasonable cost.

In some cases cloud providers may even be handling the logical aspect such as backups, data protection, securing and other items in addition to what you do to manage it, said Greg Schulz, an analyst with StorageIO Group. You can offload some physical on-site storage management tasks including acquisition, setup and configuration to the cloud.

Pro Connectivity

Gary Watson, vice president of technical engagement, Nexsan. pointed out one of the big pluses of the cloud is that it lets users freely share and access data at any time, from anywhere, from any device.

The cloud connects the modern enterprise in a way that enterprise storage solutions have never been able to do, said Watson. With the right cloud storage, organizations can experience gains across operational efficiency, business agility, time-to-market and competitive advantage as well as decreased cost.

Pro Speed

Testing done by Mediatronics showed that when the cloud is supported by the right enterprise technologies, the speeds achieved can rival onsite scores. With a 1 Gbit pipe available, Mediatronics found that an enterprise could use 15 servers backing up data simultaneously for a total of 75 TB protected in the cloud using a Zetta.net service during one nightly backup window. This compares very well to backing up onto disk. The data transfer rate recorded by Mediatronics for the Zetta.net incremental backup transfer was 975 Mb/sec. That s faster than a 5,400 rpm hard drive (800 Mb/sec) and very close to the rate of a 7,200 rpm hard drive (1064 Mb/sec).

Pro Rapid Deployment

Kevin Liebl, vice president of marketing, Zadara Storage. made the case that the public cloud bypasses the old approach to adding storage: evaluating storage demands, requesting bids from vendors, product selection, POs, waiting on delivery, assembling the various storage assets, integration, testing and data migration, provisioning, etc. Impatient users typically would be told, Winter is coming, in response to questions about how long it might take to be able to access more storage.

Pro Scalability

Scalability is another area where the public cloud rules. The various providers have done a good job in making vast amounts of storage capacity available on tap.

Virtually unlimited capacity and often scalable performance are available in the public cloud, said Liebl.

Pro Storage Immortality

Not so long ago, storage managers bought shiny new storage arrays or massive tape libraries. At the time, they seemed so cutting edge yet soon they gathered dust as obsolescence sets in. Did their hefty price tag ever really deliver the promised return on investment? In more than a few cases, the answer is a resounding no.

The public cloud offers a way to bypass the risk of purchasing soon-to-be-over-the-hill hardware. You pay for the capacity and performance you want, and the providers upgrade their environments to keep pace with state of the art egged on by competitive pressures from other providers.

The public cloud offers immortal storage in that your storage components are being upgraded in the background and after a few years your storage is not obsolete, said Liebl.

Pro Lower Upfront Cost

Evaluating, purchasing, building, provisioning and managing storage can be an expensive business. The allure of the public cloud is that it takes all this off your hands and doesn t charge an arm and a leg. In many cases, a lot of that storage capacity sits idle. Often businesses with peak periods end up buying enough storage and performance to satisfy peak demand, yet 95 percent of the time that amount of storage and IO simply isn t needed.

The public cloud allows you to pay for what you use and comes with reporting to monitor your spend and storage usage, as well as IO activity, said Schulz.

Con Lifetime Costs

Cars provide a useful pricing analogy. A new vehicle is a hefty upfront cost. The convenience of one low monthly lease payment looks great at the beginning. But when the lease is up and you owe hundreds for mileage overage and then have to pay an exorbitant amount to keep the car, the lifetime costs hit home. It can sometimes be the same with public cloud storage. Once you tally up the costs over three, four or five years will it really be cheaper than on premise? For some, the answer will be no.

Your costs over time might increase, said Schulz. If your applications are local yet your data is in the cloud, it can add to networking costs and result in increased latency.

Cons Security

Handing data off to a public cloud provider poses security and privacy concerns. Breaches across almost every public cloud service continue to be regularly reported by the media A survey that Nexsan recently conducted revealed that only about 3 percent of respondents felt that sharing files outside of the office was private and secure.

Never store anything sensitive in the public cloud, said Watson.

Dave Ginsburg, CMO at Teridion emphasized additional areas of public cloud security worry, such as managing permissions (both internal and external), vendors accessing your files for marketing and encryption purposes, confidentiality of intellectual property, transfers when on WiFi, synchronization (which document is accurate and are any incorrectly overwritten?), multiple public cloud providers, accidental deletion on shared drives and lack of clear-cut audit trails.

Con Speed

Another potential downside of public cloud storage is download and data speeds (i.e. bandwidth). Despite the fact that cloud storage has achieved some good results on benchmark tests, 22 percent of respondents to the Nexsan survey reported that the main barrier to public cloud storage was the time it took to download and upload files.

Con Compliance

In some heavily regulated industries, it is just too unworkable to use the public cloud. Healthcare, financial services and publicly traded companies have to tread very carefully if considering the public cloud.

Regulatory compliance can be tricky with these public cloud solutions and requires careful attention, said Watson. This can become an even bigger issue if a third party and numerous jurisdictions have possession of the storage/data.

Con Noisy Neighbors

Noisy neighbors are a big concern of IT managers. One cloud application or one user with high IO traffic impacts the performance of another user.

Where possible, IT managers should look for cloud storage providers who provide resource isolation to avoid co-mingling with other data, said Liebl.

Okay. so you need a quickly established lawn and don’t want to go through the uncertainties and longer establishment time of seeding. sprigging, or plugging your lawn. Usually, lawns are sodded because of one or more of the following reasons:

  • I need an instant beautiful lawn for aesthetic purposes.
  • I want the fastest lawn possible and I don’t care about cost.
  • My area has slopes and is easily washed out. I need something to hold it in place.
  • I am seeding the majority of my lawn, but I want a instant lawn in the areas closer to the entrances to my home.
  • I will have a lot of traffic (walkers / animals) across my lawn and I need something that can be walked on as soon as possible. (seeded areas must be relatively established before allowing traffic).

Sodded lawns are expensive . costing anywhere from 14 cents per sq. ft. to as much as 50-60 cents per sq. ft. – And that cost may not even include the site preparations. Much of the cost (usually at least 50%) depends on if you are going to do the work yourself, or have a commercial sodding company do the grassing work. Generally the rule of thumb is that sodded lawns are about 20 times as expensive as a seeded lawn, and 10 times more expensive than a sprigged or plugged lawn.

Sod itself costs in the range of 8-30 cents sq. ft. depending on sod kind and variety and the quantities you will purchase. Also where you can buy the sod determines the price. Many times there may be a local a sod producer in your area that will sell to you at wholesale prices ,compared to full retail prices at a local garden center. It pays both to shop around and then to also inspect the sod at your choice of sod supplier if possible. Quality of sod unfortunately can vary considerably from producer to producer.

Sod commercially installed has dropped in price due to the ability to use machines instead of labor to install large quantities of rolled sod efficiently (sometimes with netting installed like in picture below). This has helped to reduce one of the biggest costs in commercially installed sod lawns. the manual labor cost.

What should be included:

  • A crown typically requires two office visits. After numbing the tooth and nearby gums the dentist files down the tooth to make room for the crown. If a large area of tooth is missing, filling material is used to build up the tooth so it can support the crown. A crown may need to be replaced several times during the patient’s lifetime.

Additional costs:

  • There may be separate charges for an initial exam ($20-$100 or more) and dental X-rays ($10-$250 ).

Soot and odors from a household fire can penetrate many areas and damage paint, carpet, upholstery, drapes, clothing and other belongings. Even a small stovetop blaze can cause smoke and soot damage far beyond the actual burned area, and this damage can be hard to remove. Soot is oily and easily stains household textiles, while smoke penetrates deeply, even into the spaces inside walls. If not properly deodorized, smoke odors can reoccur.

  • The average cost of a fire in a house without fire sprinklers is $45,109 ; for a house with fire sprinklers the average is $2,166, according to the U.S. Fire Administration. The total cost of a fire will depend on the type, size and extent of the blaze, and the value of the items destroyed. This can vary from a few hundred dollars for a brief and contained fire (such as inside a garbage can) to more than a million dollars for destroying an upscale residence.
  • Hiring a restoration company to rebuild, clean and deodorize after a kitchen fire in a typical single-family home can start between $2,000 and $5,000 for a fairly straightforward restoration in a limited area, but a kitchen fire with more extensive damage requiring rebuilding can cost $10,000-$30,000, and restoration costs in an upscale kitchen with custom cabinets and countertops to restore or replace could be $50,000-$70,000 or more. RE: State Farm Insurance recommended ServPro, CRDN. ect.
We had a dryer fire. My wife was in the kitchen and attempted to put it out using an ABC Fire Extinguisher. Most of our original damage was from smoke. ServPro was called in to Chem Clean our home for same type of problems listed in above comment. CRDN removed all our textiles. Asbestos was discovered and ignored by ServPro saying no worries, it is only 70% contaminated and continued working spreading asbestos fibers throughout our entire home. Testing showed that over 2500 square feet of our home needed to be abated from the asbestos alone, not counting the ductwork, carpet and our personal belonging left in our home. Progressive Restoration had to come in an remove 95% of our home and have it taken to a warehouse over an hour and a half away for proper cleaning . State Farm will pay for part of the asbestos removal but not all saying it was ServPro’s fault. I can go on and on.

After being told that dry chemical fire extinguisher contamination was the primary need for fire restoration, which has since led to chronic health problems and the death of three indoor pets, damages furniture and soft goods, insulation, to electrical system, HVAC and ductwork and innumerable appliances and electronics, due to the fact that Servepro used unvented air scrubbers and left the HVAC heat on with the door to the air handler left open, which spred the dry chemical fire extinguisher throughout the home.

For example, BlueCross BlueShield of Alabama [1 ] offers coverage for medically necessary ambulance transport, to the nearest facility that can treat the patient, on many policies. For patients with health insurance, out-of-pocket costs for ambulance service typically consist of a copay of $15 to $100 or more or coinsurance of 10% to 50%. Some ambulance service providers will “balance bill” — bill the patient for the remainder of the bill above what the insurance company pays, if they don’t have a contract with that insurance company; some states have outlawed this practice. According to Woodburn Ambulance Service in Woodburn, OR, their patients with commercial insurance pay an average of $432 out of pocket.
  • For patients without health insurance, ambulance service cost typically depends on location, whether the trip is for an emergency or scheduled transport, how many miles the patient travels and whether basic life support or advanced life support is needed. The cost can be nothing out-of-pocket in cities where services are covered by taxes, but usually ranges from less than $400 to $1,200 or more plus mileage. For example, in Lima, OH, taxes pay for any ambulance services not covered by insurance, so residents do not receive a bill. The city of LeMars, IA, charges $375 for non-emergency basic life support service up to $600 for emergency service with advanced life support. The city of Urbana, OH, charges $650. The city of Nichols Hills, OK [2 ]. offers a membership plan for $2.50 per month for ambulance rides at no out-of-pocket cost, but non-members pay $1,100 plus $9 per mile for ambulance service. Woodburn Ambulance Service in Woodburn, OR, offers a membership plan, but non-members pay $1,220 plus $20 per mile per trip.

What should be included:

  • In an emergency, the ambulance provider that services the location typically will respond immediately to a call. The dispatcher will determine if only emergency medical technicians are needed, for basic life support, or if paramedics are needed, for advanced life support.
  • The ambulance crew will assess the patient’s medical condition and check vital signs such as pulse, blood pressure and respiratory rate, and will determine if transport to a nearby hospital emergency room is needed. If so, the crew will provide needed care during the ambulance ride. Basic life support care, typically for non-life-threatening emergencies, includes minor treatment, continued monitoring, and possibly administration of oxygen. Advanced life support care, for life-threatening emergencies, also can include CPR, administration of medication, breathing tube insertion and other needed treatments.

  • Medical supplies — for example, sterile gloves, needles, IV supplies, catheters, and saline — used during the trip can add hundreds or even thousands of dollars to the final bill. For example, providers in Los Angeles County [3 ] can charge $24.75 for an oxygen mask, as well as for bandages, dressings ice packs; they can charge $45.25 for a burn kit or obstetrical kit; and can charge $80.25 for an infusion pump or pulse oximeter.
  • If a critical care nurse or respiratory therapist is required during an ambulance ride, it can add hundreds of dollars to the cost.

Discounts:

  • Some providers will negotiate a discount of up to 20% or more for uninsured patients who pay cash or pay within a certain timeframe. For example, Lincoln County Ambulance Service [4 ] in Kansas offers a 20% discount for payment within 30 days and a 10% discount to uninsured patients. And Woodburn Ambulance Service in Oregon offers a 10% discount for payment made within 30 days of service.

Shopping for an ambulance:

  • The American College of Emergency Physicians Foundation [5 ] offers a guide to when to call an ambulance in an emergency. In a 9-1-1 emergency, the ambulance provider that services that location will respond; in some locations, there is more than one provider and it might be possible to request a certain provider.
  • For a scheduled transport, a hospital or physician should be able to provide a referral for an ambulance service. Or, the American Ambulance Association [6 ] offers a provider directory by state and city.

What cars are the cheapest to insure?

Automobile insurance policies have several components, but there are two main parts that help you find the cheapest cars to insure.

One of the two main parts is the liability insurance. It covers the possible costs you would incur if you harm (in an accident) some one’s property, or their personal human body or other person’s human body, which might be riding in their vehicle. In other words, “your liability”; the word liability, in simple terminology, means “What I owe you because I harmed you or your property.”

Generally, the liability cost for a policy is the same, no matter what type of auto you are driving. Some policies may offer discounts based on safety features on your car. Liability claims cost less when safety features are installed so the companies offer lower premiums for safer cars.

The second major portion of an auto policy is called “Comprehensive Collision”, or “Physical Damage”.

Insurance companies rate vehicle premiums for comprehensive and collision based upon what it costs to repair your auto at an authorized auto body shop.

Unless you are driving an exotic sports car, the comprehensive premiums typically will be a relatively fixed amount. So the savings you can achieve will be for the collision part of the policy. This is the part of the policy that pays to have your car repaired. What is a solar power purchase agreement?

A solar power purchase agreement (PPA) is a financial agreement where a developer arranges for the design, permitting, financing and installation of a solar energy system on a customer’s property at little to no cost. The developer sells the power generated to the host customer at a fixed rate that is typically lower than the local utility’s retail rate. This lower electricity price serves to offset the customer’s purchase of electricity from the grid while the developer receives the income from these sales of electricity as well as any tax credits and other incentives generated from the system. PPAs typically range from 10 to 25 years and the developer remains responsible for the operation and maintenance of the system for the duration of the agreement. At the end of the PPA contract term, a customer may be able to extend the PPA, have the developer remove the system or choose to buy the solar energy system from the developer.

Benefits of PPAs to Solar Customers

  • No or low upfront capital costs: The developer handles the upfront costs of sizing, procuring and installing the solar PV system. Without any upfront investment, the host customer is able to adopt solar and begin saving money as soon as the system becomes operational.
  • Reduced energy costs: Solar PPAs provide a fixed, predictable cost of electricity for the duration of the agreement and are structured in one of two ways. Under the fixed escalator plan, the price the customer pays rises at a predetermined rate, typically between 2% – 5%. This is often lower than projected utility price increases. The fixed price plan, on the other hand, maintains a constant price throughout the term of the PPA saving the customer more as utility prices rise over time.
  • Limited risk: The developer is responsible for system performance and operating risk.
  • Better leverage of available tax credits: Developers are typically better positioned to utilize available tax credits to reduce system costs. For example, municipal hosts and other public entities with no taxable income would not otherwise be able to take advantage of the Section 48 Investment Tax Credit.
  • Potential increase in property value: A solar PV system has been shown to increase residential property values. The long term nature of these agreements allows PPAs to be transferred with the property and thus provides customers a means to invest in their home at little or no cost.

Market Adoption and Policy

PPAs provide a means to avoid the upfront capital costs of installing a solar PV system as well as simplifying the process for the host customer. In some states, however, the PPA model faces regulatory and legislative challenges that would regulate developers as electric utilities. A solar lease is another form of third-party financing that is very similar to a PPA, but does not involve the sale of electric power. Instead, customers lease the system as they would an automobile. In both cases, the system is owned by a third party while the host customer receives the benefits of solar with little or no up-front costs. These third-party financing models have quickly become the most popular method for customers to realize the benefits of solar energy. Colorado, for example, first entered the market in 2010 and by mid-2011 third-party installations represented over 60% of all residential installations and continued to rise to 75% through the first half of 2012. This upward trend is evident throughout states that have introduced third-party financing models.

PPA Considerations

  • SRECs: Solar renewable energy credits (SRECs) show that a certain amount of electricity was produced using solar energy. They are typically bought and sold by load serving entities (typically regulated utilities) to meet obligations associated with state-level renewable energy standards. SRECs are also used by consumers who voluntarily purchase them for marketing claims or other use. Most often in PPAs. SRECs are owned by the developer. When entering into a PPA, it will be important for a customer to clearly understand who owns and can sell the SRECs generated from the PV system, the risks attendant to SREC ownership, and the tradeoffs with respect to PPA price.
  • How to finance: While both third-party financing models provide numerous benefits, purchasing a PV system outright has its own benefits. Anyone considering installing a solar PV system should consider each of the financing options available to find the best fit.
  • Site upgrades: While the developer is responsible for installation, operation and maintenance of a solar PV system, the host customer may need to make investments in their property in order to support the installation of the system, lower the cost of installation or to comply with local ordinances. This might include, for example, rooftop repairs or trimming trees that shade the PV system.
  • Possible higher property taxes: While a PV system may help to raise the site’s property value, there is also a potential increase in property taxes when the property value is reassessed. Different states, however, have different policies in regards to these possible property tax increases.
