Take a look at the Ford Ranger pickup if you want a good-looking vehicle that works hard and takes you to even the most remote locations. The Ranger has a new four-wheel drive system and offers great road holding in the snow or off-road. It also has a great safety pedigree – it got the first five-star Euro NCAP rating awarded to a pickup – and pedestrian protection was a particular highlight in tests.
If you opt for the Ranger XL there are a number of body styles to choose from. With a Double Cab 4×4, Regular Chassis Cab 4×4, Super Cab 4×2 and 4×4 and Regular Cab 4×2, there should be a model for everyone. Power comes from a choice of two engines – the 2.2 Duratorq TDCi 150PS or 2.2 Duratorq TDCi 125PS, each combined with a six-speed manual gearbox. In the cab, the driver’s window is a one-shot model, while the front windows are electrically operated. The door mirrors are also electrically operated – and are heated for a quick getaway on winter mornings.
There are two XLT body styles to choose from – the Double Cab 4×4 and Super Cab 4×4. Under the bonnet there’s a 2.2 Duratorq TDCi 150PS, combined with a six-speed manual gearbox. As well as the features on the XL, the XLT also has a heated windscreen and good-looking 16in alloy wheels. To keep the driver comfortable on long drives, cruise control is a feature on the XLT, while you can keep in touch thanks to the Bluetooth hands-free phone facility, which also has USB interface and Voice Control System.
Take a step up from the XLT and choose the Limited, which is more advanced when it comes to technology. There are two body styles to choose from – the Double Cab 4×4 and the Super Cab 4×4. Plus there are two engine options – the 2.2 Duratorq TDCi 150PS, with automatic or six speed manual gearbox and the 3.2 Duratorq TDCi 200PS, which is combined with a six-speed manual gearbox. On the outside, the Limited looks good with its 17in alloy wheels, its door mirrors are power-foldable and feature puddle lights. To make parking easier there are parking distance sensors, and the driver also benefits from a large, multi-function colour display.
The Ranger Wildtrak, which comes solely in the Double Cab 4×4 body style, goes even further when it comes to technology. You get all the great benefits of the Ford Ranger, such as the Duratorq diesel engine, which makes use of variable geometry turbochargers to gain increased power (as well as increased torque of 365Nm). There is also a five-cylinder 3.2-litre engine, which offers 200PS and a maximum torque of 470Nm. There are 18in machined alloy wheels to look great, and the style continues with the body-colour front bumper, sports highlighting and Titanium front grille. Making reversing easy is a rear-view camera, and finding your way is a breeze with the colour satnav. Luxurious touches include leather wrapped steering wheel and Ice Blue ambient lighting.
